As everyone knows, about a month ago we had an election, the results of which upset a good number of people. Upset them so much, in fact, that several states are taking such drastic action as to secede from the USA.
In my humble opinion, this is a bit of an overreaction…but that’s where my opinion stops being public.
Come on everybody, can’t we all just get along?
The sky is a patchwork this evening.
To one side,
the ominous dark of an immature storm
lies heavy upon the trees while
to the other,
soaks the clouds with pastels
and lights up the dusk.
This dangerous unbalance tugs
at the path before my feet,
distorting, twisting, skewing it
until it is too deformed
for me to journey on.
In the 2012 Presidential campaigns,
all I heard were clashing clouds.
Sarah Palin stressed the importance to
“defeat Barack Obama.”
while President Obama repeated sentiments of
“challenges” and “victories”,
as if the days were a countdown to war
rather than election.
One Democrat in a family of Republicans,
I watched my Mother silently disagree with her father.
Harsh words were never heard,
but there were offhand comments
and not-so-good-natured jibes.
And as I observed
the tension between family members,
it seemed to me
they had forgotten
that they belong to the same sky.
